J.P.'S SARDINA Tan, Olive , White, Tux (black), or Tux with Tails By Jeff Priest (in collaboration with Gary Bulla) Materials Hook: Varivas 990S Hook –1. 1/0. 2/0. 3/0 or any forged short shank big game hook. Body: White buck tail Flash: Angel hair pearl gold or pearl green Back: Tan, light olive, white or black buck tail Eyes: pearl 3D eyes to match size of baitfish pattern
Wrap thread from the eye of the hook 3/4 of the way down the shank of the hook (Varivas 990S Hook -1. 1/0. 2/0. 3/0.) Take a small amount of white buck tail (approx1/4" in diameter and 3". long) and mix in pearl gold angel hair and tie it in on the shank closest to the bend. (Make sure to coat the thread with head cement after each step.) Use the end section of buck tail so the material does not splay. Rotate the fly up side down and tie in another section of white buck tail mixed with the pearl gold angel hair. Tie each section in front of the other. Rotate the fly back and tie in another section of white buck tail mixed with the pearl gold angel hair. Make sure each section is just front of the other. Slightly cover each previous wrap. Tie in a small amount of olive green or tan buck tail 3/4 the length of the fly and secure. Rotate the fly (up side down) and tie in one more small section of buck tail / angel hair mix as the belly. Rotate. Place two strands of blue flashabou per side along the length of the body from head to tail, (if desired) secure and whip finish. Add pearl 3D eyes on each side (sized to match) and color top portion of nose only with a marker to match back. Coat the nose and eyes with a clear finish (Sally Hansen Hard as nails polish) and let dry. Repeat with second coat. Make sure not to coat belly section with clear coat as it may interfere with the gap of the hook! Gary's note: Jeff is currently using UV Knot Sense for his head cement. |
