Chartreuse Clouser Flashtail

Materials:

Thread: Clear fine mono or strong thread in desired color.
Hook: Mustad 3407, Gamakatsu SL-11-3H size 4-1/0
Eyes: Spirit River red eye medium or equivalent (no longer than hook gap)
Belly: White Ocean or Ultra hair or bucktail
Tail: Silver flashabou or Crystal Flash
Wing: Chartreuse Ultra  or Ocean Hair
Bloody nose: Red thread

Tying instructions:

  1. Sharpen hook in vice if necessary.
  2.  Tie in dumbbell eyes two eye widths behind hook eye using crisscross and
over and under wraps. Then wrap tightly at base of eyes. Put a drop Super
glue on hook side of eyes.
  3. Tie in belly material in back of eyes, wrap under eyes and secure cut buts
with a few wraps at head.
  4. Turn fly over in vice. tie in 10 strands of flash material longer than
    belly material at head.
  5. Tie in wing material approximately same length as belly. Note: Belly and
wing material should have staggered ends-you may cut the flash material to
length so that it extends beyond wing.
  6. Finish wrapping tapered head and whip finish.
  7. Make several wraps with red thread in front of eyes at back of head. Whip
    finish.
  8. Apply epoxy to head and eyes for durability if desired.

Fishing Notes: A universal salt fly for inshore and offshore. Fish on a
sinking head, let the fly drop to desired level and make long firm strips.
The fly will jig up and down with pauses during the stripping. My favorite
fly for kayak fishing. If you carry a pair of scissors you can trim the fly
to match baitfish size. Do not crosscut the tail. Make repeated cuts into the
tail from behind to keep the wing material tapered and uneven.
For the surf tie in some olive topping and make some in smaller sizes. All
the surf species will eat it.   You MUST have this fly for Espiritu Santo in Baja.
