SCL 7/29... Day of Firsts

-first 4-species day in the surf
-first legal flattie
-first time when the fish decided whether the reel would be used.
- first time i felt a croaker "croak"
- first time i busted a rod on a fish.

1 24" flattie,
8 YFC (best fish ~ 14")
11 BSP (no dinks!)
1 32" shovelnose

got to SCL at 5:30 am; excellent structure between
the Taj and Sand Point... just waiting to be filled.

walked down the beach to a shallow trough, and
"Little Moe" (a 3 foot leopard) is cruising back and
forth... i keep pitching at him and even put the
shades on (at 6 am!) to try and track him in the
surf, but to no avail.

Little Moe disappears, but a few casts later, i'm in
to something solid... and now here comes Little Moe back
for a look! Yikes, i don't want to land 1/2 a fish,
so i apply a lot of pressure, and out comes a
halibut! (picture below). Got him on a #4 chartreuse
"buck-rat" (you've seen the pics before).

Release the 'but, and a few casts later, something
solid again... after a few head-shakes, its making
a dash for the far shore. Now, honestly, on the
old 9-weight broomstick, there's been almost no
fish in the last 8 months which absolutely had to be
put on the reel... but this fish was having its own
way... i don't know if i hooked up Little Moe, or
it was an enormous corbina... but as he's racing
out... pop! and he's gone... busted the middle
of the loop on the uni-knot, right at the bug.

The BSPs, YFCs, Halibut, Sharks... they were all
there in the same spot: at the ocean exit of the
trough.

at the same location, i hooked into something unmoveable;
at first i thought it was just a bottom-snag... until it
gave three slow shakes... i applied a lot of pressure,
and it just sat there, as if to say: "go ahead, see if
you can get me in". I applied a lot of pressure...
and it didn't budge. Too bad it came unbuttoned...
i'm consoling myself that it was a shovelnose, not
the "Big H".

As i was making my way back to the car, i hooked
up ("solidly", as Steve would say) a 32"
shovelnose... and in my eagerness to be done
with him snapped my rod tip.

All the fish besides the 'but were taken on a
#4 OCW clouser (Olive/Chart/White); 9 foot
tapered leader.

All fish were released.

Any day you bust your rod on a fish is a good day.

tim

ps Bulla, Bulla, did you put your client into fish?

SLC = Santa Claus Lane

SLC refers to a beach called Santa Claus Lane Beach on the northern edge of Carpenteria on the way to Santa Barbara. I don't know if it is still there, but there used to be a complex of Christmas and Santa Claus oriented buildings along Hwy 101.

Perhaps others here on the board can give some parking/access details since I've only driven by this beach on Hwy 101 on my way to Santa Barbara.

Of course, with this great fishing report, SCL is rapidly making it's way to the top of my list of beaches that I want to fish very soon.

Go Tim

Looks like you had an awesome morning at SCL. I need to go back there soon.
I did Trancas this morning around 9:00am and ended up with seven BSP and one corbina all on the surf rat. I saw corbina everywhere...there was a corbina going up the beach and a corbina sliding down the beach, even corbina doing head stands. Saw lots of 3 foot shovelnoses in extremely shallow water. Real tackle busters if I can get one to bite.

Surf rat

S. Lee,
Any chance you can post a pic of your surf rat? If you don't have a digital camera, a great alternative is just to scan it with a color scanner...
Yours is root beer (medium to dark brown?) cactus chenille, and med. brown marabou tail, length as shown in the fly gallery, and #6 Mustad
hook, correct?
Thanks, Steve P.

Tim,

Hell of a morning - that's a month's action in a couple of hours.
I'm wondering if that large unmovable fish might be a ray. I've spotted a couple of real impressive rays recently - like 3' across.

Hey Steve

Correct...I tie mine with Hareline Dubbin Cactus Chenille Large Root Beer in medium color I guess... it doesn't specify a light or dark hue. In sun light it gives off an olive color kind of like the motor oil grubs.
I use brown or medium brown marabou tail with a couple strands of Olive Krystal flash all on size 4 mustad bronze streamer hooks.
Size 6 should not make a difference but I will scan a couple of the surfrats I have caught corbina on and post them on this site this weekend.

I fished SCL on Friday morning from 6:30-10:00 am. I didn't do as well as you did but I did catch a lot of perch and snagged a few shovelnose sharks. Saw lots of activity in the skinny water from the corbinas, sharks and rays. Didn't get a single corbina that morning.

Shoot me an e-mail next time you go.

I hit La Conchita this morning, 6:45 to 9:30. No Corbina sighted, and only one perch caught. I did hook a shovelnose that gave me quite a pull (2 1/2 ft or so). So at least that was fun.

I have to say, as a newbie, that I am getting baffled by structure. I am seeing rips, what looks like holes and channels, but nothing seems to come of it...

Nothing left to do but keep on reading, and getting out there. After I get a new rod, cause mine broke today. Darn! I was planning on building a new 4wt for trout, guess I am gonna add a 7 wt to my list of things to get.

Have a good one,
Barret

Hey S. Lee

how did i miss you?

i was there today (Fri 8/1) from first light (5:30) until
10:30 am. You must have been north of the "Taj
Mahal", because i had the stretch south of there
to myself, other than a few beachcombers/joggers.

What a difference a day makes... today i ended up
with only 3 perch and 3 shovelnose, the biggest
of those about 30"... i suppose it was worth it
though... it proved to me that shovelnose can
actually be fair-hooked, and will sometimes put
up a good fight, too!

I only saw corbina at first light, then really none
later... the crab beds were not showing... maybe
because the surf is so low.

My replacement stick is a Echo 7 wt... too early to
say how i like it... gotta get used to chucking slightly
less weight.

I'll shoot you an e-mail next time i'm planning on
going, but i first have to go on a "emergency fishing
trip" to Lake Powell... so i'll be off the beach for
a little bit.

tim

ps hey barret... keep at it, it will get better!

Steve,
These are the surfrats I have caught corbina on. I caught 4 on the rootbeer and 1 on the olive.

S. Lee surf rats

S. Lee,

Thanks for posting your version of the surf rat - I didn't respond earlier because I was doing a little first time nymphing on the North Platte Miracle Mile.

Just so I get it right on materials, could you post the Model # of your Mustad hook, the label on the
marabou used for the tail, and the cactus chenille used for the bodies? (ie., does it actually say "root beer" and "large" in the label for the chenille, and "olive" in the case of your olive example? and does it say "Medium brown" and "strung" for the marabou? (My fly shop does not have a large selection of these things so I'll have to mail order them, sight unseen).
Thanks for your help, Steve P.

And are those brass barbell eyes on your examples or brass cone heads, and what size?

Thanks, Steve P.

Surf Rat Materials Used

Hook: Size 4 Tiemco TMC 5262 (Nymphs and Streamer, Perfect Beand, Down Eye, 2x Heavy, 2x Long, Forged, Bronz)

Tail: Spirit River Strung Marabou Dark Brown

Body: Harline Dubbin, Inc. Cactus Chenille Large Root Beer

Body: Spirit River Estaz Pearl Olive (BEST 030)

As for the head I used standard brass bead head like the ones used on woolybuggers and large trout nymphs. I don't remember the size but it should not make a difference at all. The only reason I use the bead head is because I like to fish two flies and it is much easier to cast. I use a 350 grain so getting the fly on the bottom isn't a problem.

When I am tossing the 200 grain I use surf rats tied with Bead Chain Eyes Large Gold or Machined Bumbell Eyes depending on surf conditions.

If you can't find Root Beer I can send you a pack...e-mail me at baetis54@cs.com

Wow,

My old, old, old sand worm looks just like the surf rat except the sand worm had two different colors of cactus chennile.
Fiery brown and cinnamon (J.Fair Material)
The tail was also alot longer. Had a cone head backed up with a bead.
Now it's the llama hair sand worm

Hi Jay

I also tie some of the surf rats with longer tails also to replicate marine worms. I noticed that different tail lengths give different action to the bug. While fishing today I noticed that the surf rat with the longer tail looked very much like a worm wiggling out of the sand and the ones with the short tail looked like the tentacles of a shrimp. Both are productive but I havn't caught a corbina on the one with longer tail but I'm sure it will work when the time is right for a corbina bite.

Where can I get the fiery brown...I have been trying to find this color and I know only a few guys that have the Fiery Brown.

Hey Lee, I tie a fly we call the blood worm pattern. I use leech yarn comes in rust brown or just rust. It's basically a nymph head body with a bead head and little hackle. I leave a two to three inch tail on it. I've caught Halibut, YFC, Perch and a Corbina in about ten feet of water. You can find it at Bob Marriots.

Thanks for the 411

I may pay a visit to Marriot's some time before school starts. I am looking for a good lug worm or blood worm pattern. I will tie this pattern and give it a shot.
I am from the Thousand Oaks area so hopefully Malibu Fishn' Tackle has the materials.
