Oxnard Perch
Hit my favorite perch beach in Oxnard on Satruday for the high tide @ 8:20 am. The perch were there. I got 5 in an hour of fishing with many LDR's.
all were bigger than 8 inches too. I went on Sunday agian and got 27 in one and a half hours during the high tide this morning. The hot fly was a
size 8 black surf rat. I think they are spawning thought and small size was the key. Out of the 27 fish only two were under 8 inches. This
certainly is encouraging because the perch fishing had been so slow this year. Maybe we will have a hot streak like up north?

Kerry,
i went in search of cooler and cleaner water this morning (Sun 9/7)...
to Rancho Guadalupe Dunes County Park. (A two
hour drive northwest from Ventura).
it was much as you described it: mucho perch, and
most of them were in the 9-10" range... my best fish
was 12". There were some WSP present as well,
but i only caught smallish ones.
in 9 months of frequent fishing, i've never seen a
beach so "alive": literally hundreds of pinnipeds and
dolphins corralling and crashing bait, with pelicans
and seagulls following them around to dive on the
frightened fish... and schools of fish bursting out
of the water in front of dolphins.
i got a nice show: at one point i was watching four
dolphins cruising, playing, and jockeying for
position in a curling wave-face when then turned and dived...
about 10 seconds later, 300 or so striped sardines
came tearing up the skinny and threw themselves onto
the beach about my feet. (I couldn't help myself; i
burst out laughing from the surprise).
Conditions:
Water temps: 54 @ 7:30 am, 58 @ 11:30 am
Sky: Clear
Surf: 2-3 feet.
It took me a while to get "in the groove", so i only
ended up bringing 15-20 fish to hand... there were
a large number of rhomboid-chuckers on the beach,
and i'm thinking that all that slaughter going on
was wreaking havoc on my "fishing karma"... it
sure seemed that way, because my fishing only
picked up after i got away from them. (Does the
presence/smell of bait in the water put perch off
of flies?)

charma
Tim
Was your charma wrecked by the slaughter coming from the seals, dolphins, pelicans, and gulls or the from the "rhomboid chuckers?

Normally, i won't respond to anonymous posts, esp.
when it appear that they are trolls; this time i'll make
an exception
I admit, that from my post it might appear that i was
bashing bait-users, or folks who keep fish. Tis not so, read on...
See the guy in the foreground?
Notice how he's still fishing?
I snapped this shot after watching him throw
five fish into the bucket in his backpack... i suppose
you'll tell me that he just "switched species", or
always fishes "bait C&R" after he limits out.
He had lots of company.
There were plenty of others of his ilk who clearly
were poaching: 6 or 7 dead BSP on the beach, or
5 fish in the bucket and bringing another one up the beach
(with two poles with lines out); or five fish in plain
view and a bulging backpack fifteen feet away.
That's what kills karma: when you have a choice,
and you use it for destruction of the commons... (i
don't think a dolphin has the same choice available.)

Hey Time I hear ya! On Saturday and Sunday there was an old couple fishing and they had at least 20 perch in their bucket each day. And they kept
fishing long after I left. I really wanted to just pick up their bucket and dump it out into the surf! It is really frustrating.

Do not put up with poaching! Call CALTIP and complain! Input to the wardens will vector them to area such as this. If you see a poacher and his
vehicle get it's number and report that as well. At least here in the Santa Barbara area the wardens have most conciderate of help even to the point
of once familar with you letting them call you direct on their cell phone in order to expedite their response to a situation. Know you are right and
help out! LEW

My apologies
Tim
Sorry I posted that without my name, too much of a hurry I guess. I have to admit I am a little touchy when it comes to people who dump on us who
keep a fish or two, but you're right on in this case. Keep your cellphone in a ziplock for these situations. 1-888-DFG-CALTIP then 03 at the prompt.
That will get you to someone who will nail these guys.
