Willie,

I think we talked at Marriotts one day - bonito and the Sci Anglers 79LA
reel? That's you right? 10 years on the beans - you must have some stories!

Thanks,
Steve P.

Hey all, new to the board and new to bean chasing. Bumped into a few of the board members on the sand over the past year or so. Met jon (hip) at the Carp spot last summer and chatt with him on another forum all the time.

This is a great thread, really enjoy reading about the start of bean chasing. Very cool. Thanks to all who have done the research. Well done, gentlemen.

Thanks,

This by far and away has been, dare I say, the most informative and interesting thread I have ever read on the subject of fly fishing the surf for Corbina or any other fish for that matter. It has been an absolute pleasure (treasure) reading about the wonderful stories told and many different techniques tried and used.
I am extremely grateful to Jon for beginning this thread and to all, especially big props to Steve P. for spending his valuable time researching and posting everything he has found and learned, and then some. What an awesome thread!!!
My only request would be that this thread be made a sticky, so that it doesn't fall off the edge into thread oblivion and lost for ever.
Again, Thanks and Much Respect and Gratefulness to all for sharing.

Tom-thanks.

OK, I'll put it on top for a while-if it grows-but I don't want to give the impression that it can't take additional posts!

Thanks Gary!
I'm looking forward to hearing from others Steve has asked, or others who have stories as well...

Hello, Steve P. introduced me to this website.
I have only had a chance to read this thread; very interesting and informative.
I now live in Japan, but grew up in Long Beach, CA and learned both fly tying and rod building at the Long Beach Casting Club in the early 70's.
I thought I would introduce myself here, as the first saltwater fish I caught flyfishing was a corbina. As a kid, it was the closest to sight fishing for bonefish on the flats as I could get, and it would be 20 more years before I would go to Belize to realize that particular dream.
If it swims I will try (most of the time unsuccessfully!) try to catch it on a fly ;barred surf perch in Cali, tarpon and billfish in Belize, wahoo and dorado here in Japan.
As we say in Japan, 宜しくお願いします!

More bean-time stories - he's a real mutha!

Postby Steve P. » Thu Aug 13, 2009 5:01 pm

I found out more about corbina fly fishing history since my last posts in this
thread last year so I will be adding more tales over the next month or so.

However, before adding that stuff, I got to thinking that we have identified several possible Fathers
of Corbina Fly Fishing and the history might be intertwined and a bit murky
on that score, more in weeks to come,
but there is a clear choice for another category, the Mother of
Corbina Fly Fishing! A bit like the Mother in the Shoe story or Mother Earth. He's not a
she, but he is like the nurturing Mother Earth of Corbina Fly Fishing -
he has provided, with lots of help from webmaster Tim Postel
(and was Tim's predecessor Taylor?), a bulletin
board, fittingly with a corbina and fly rod and reel in the masthead, where
corbina fly fishers have met, discussed, provided fish reports, shared new
flies and methods, and, ultimately, bred many more corbina fly fishers.
He started it all off with a website on which he provided monthly reports
and stories of bean fishing. This website the Gary Bulla site, has
done at least as much as anything to promote the sport of corbina
fly fishing IMHO.

So, IMHO, Gary Bulla is the Mother, as well as one of the Fathers,
of Corbina Fly Fishing. Many thanks to Gary for all that he has done,
and many many thanks to Tim Postel for hanging in there, making
big contributions, and keeping
the website going! And of course to all bulletin board posters for
the many truly amazing posts made here over many years!
