Does anyone know if yellowtail can be caught on a flyrod? Has anyone ever tried?

It's alright, i have had days like that...

I just aqquired the Galvan T-10 reel..loaded it with 400 Grain line and will be using it soon to target YellowTail. That Tropical Storm that brought in the Clouds & Humidity the past couple of Days has warmed the Water abit more... Gotta Be Yellowtail moving about....
A 10 wieght will be my Tool of Choice for Yellowtail.....

Hey Hip and Dean,

I havn't been flyfishing much lately. All of my friends that do fish have been fishing for largemouth bass and partyboat/charter fishing so I have been doing a lot of conventional tackle fishing.
I do miss flyfishing for surf species but small perch just isn't going to cut it for me this summer.

Man I realy need to get a Yellowtail or bonito on the old flyrod!

Fished Santa Monica pier this afternoon with my non-flyfishing friends. I got into some pretty big bonita a 25" WSB on Krocodiles.

Someone save me from conventional tackle monotony!

Fished San Clemente Island last Friday on a 1.5 day charter. We got into some really big Yellowtail. My friend hooked into what fought like a 30 pounder but ended up breaking his rod.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to hook and land a 25-30lb Yellowtail on a flyrod.

I think I am going to need a 12 weight rod to handle the big boys.

SUNG,
If you can swing a Sunday, how about we get together & head to Kings Harbour for the Bonito???? we can rent a Skiff for $75. for the Day...
I'd recommend getting some 'Chovies to Chum with & that will add an additional $25 to our day....

about $50 bucks each for the Day...

Let me know...

Why don't you try Flyfishing for those Bass???? That's how Lee & Myself have been doing it... alot more fun...

Hey Dean,

As soon as I get a job I will be saving up for a boat.

Kings Harbor sounds good but I will be busy Sunday. :(

Are those seals still at Kings? Stupid question.

SUNG,
As I stated in my Report about fishing Kings Harbour, Then Seal Population seems to be down from how bad it used to be. The New Owners of the Bait Receiver put up a Fence (Of Sorts) around the Receiver and you do not have the hoardes pulling themselves up on the platform to work on their Tans (LOL!!!).
There were maybe 7 seals near the Receiver .. usually there are pushing 16...
Also I was informed the Bonito are soo thick in the Harbour that the Seals don't bother attacking the one on your line..they got plenty to munch on... Hope it stays that way...

I thought You were working at that Resturant, which I never got over to eat at...?????

We'll do Kings Harbour ASAP....

Yellowtail

Postby sierraflyfisher » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:20 pm

I went on a 6 pack yellowtail trip out of SD a couple of moths ago. I brought both 8 and 10 wt rods. The 10 was overkill... 8 wt was much more fun... you couldn't apply as much muscle. Lot's of fun!

How big were these Yellowtail? Is it possible to land a 20-30lb yellowtail on an 8 weight? I've got a St Croix Legend Ultra 8 weight but I'm afraid to use it for 20-30 lb yellows.

Well i guess if it does break I can send it in to get it fixed.

Yellowtail

They were anywhere from 5-20+ lbs. The largest I caught w/ my 8wt was about 20lbs. My 8wt is a Sage XP and my 10wt is a Sage RPLXi. Plenty of backbone...

I think an 8wt if fine however how long do you want to fight and you better not let him take you to the kelp... There's $60 lost... With my 10wt I could muscle them a bit and that's why I prefered my 8.

Last time we fished for the Yellowtail we were fishing near the kelp. My friend's yellow took him into the kelp so I was a bit worried about using an 8 weight.
After he got it out of the kelp the fish ran hard and eventually broke his rod.

He wasn't flyfishing. He was using a 20lb class rod and 20lb P-Line.

My view is this:

If they are the small "Firecracker" size Yellowtail (up to about 12 pounds) then an 8wt. is fine...but if they are over 15 pounds to say 30 pounds... I'd use strictly the 10 wt... No way in hell one could turn and hope to control a 15 pound plus Yellowtail that was determined to head into the kelp with a 8 wt. not as much back bone & muscle as a 10wt...
I certainly agree a 8wt. is more fun & doesn't tend to blow out your casting arm as fast as a 10 wt. but with a 10wt. i know I have a much better chance of turning bigger yellowtail..
(yellowtail are members of the Jack family, which are considered the Hardest fighting fish in the Ocean).
Locally it seems that the Yellowtail that are showing are small enough where using an 8wt. is acceptable..but I'd still have that 10 wt. rigged & ready to go just in case....
