Bryan's Fly rod YT

Bryan (Sinapti) and I went out after the storm for what we thought would be a crap shoot given the change in weather. usually this results in putting the fish off the feed. We left Shelter Island at 6 am and the seas were a little bumpy. But as the day progressed it became down right nice to our surprise. We fpoud some paddys early about 25 miles out at the 302 bank with nothing holding. We headed south and found the same, paddys and no fish. Then we took a different angle and a stach of paddys close to where we began. The first held a dodo that we couldn't get to go. Then we came upon a paddy and about 10 yt and what seemed like dodos rushed the boat. We had discussed a plan based on past experinces to get the fish to take a fly. We drifted by the paddy and threw chunked sardines, a few takers. We drifted again with a little more action. Then on the third drift the Yt began hitting every chunk and looking for more. We had not even thrown a fly at this point waiting for the fish to get lit before we cast. Bryan was up and cast a Gummy minnow and a nce YT takes it on the first cast as it was mixed in with the other chunks. The fish starts to wrap us around the kelp but we moved the boat and got a good angle. Bryan is a pro at playing big fish and he worked the YT down and dirty with his 10 wt Loomis and Billy Pate Bonefish reel. Soon we had the fish to gaff and in the boat. We made more drifts but the fish turned off or wised to the game. We moved on and found a paddy with DoDo, big DoDo and we, actually I mostly, proceeded to farm 4 DoDo's before we had to head home. It was amazing how quickly the fish got off the feed and in some cases even turned their noses at the chunked and live that we threw. All in all a great day. Bryan is fun to fish with. He comes prepared and brings game. There was little tide and given the weather change it could have been off the hook. I think we may have found a real reliable method for getting paddy fish on the fly. We saw jumping marlin, grey whales, moalas and very few other boats. I'll do more research this weekend. I'll post the pictures soon. My computer crashed and I'm having to download all my programs in the new laptop. Yuk. can't wait till the weekend. The swell has finally layed down, this week has big tides and the fish are here. Game time baby.

Way to go guys! Randy, i'm super jealous you guys can fish those pelagics around home, they beat our wimpy trout up here anyday. Always fun to read reports about you and Tim and other board members layin the smack down though. We'll have to talk soon about that electric trolling motor and fish finder. Maybe we can fish when you guys make your norcal trip this fall. tight lines and keep the reports comin -Loren

The best of the season is just kicking off down here. You and your dad should try to get down sometime or maybe next year before Baja to target Makos. Tim and I will be up in November steelhead fishing or striper fishing. If you are still interested in the trolling motor and fishfinder we can arrange to meet and you can pick them up. Maybe we can get some fishing in. I'm sure you have the stripes dialed in by now.

Here are the picts that go with the post. This is one of the paddies we fished. Nice lookin weed huh. It was 25 miles SW from Point Loma.

Here is Bryan putting the heat to his Tail. He really worked that Loomis and Pate.

Check out the Gummy minnow this bruiser macked on the first cast.

Here is Bryan with his fish. This was actually a slow day. The fish were super picky. They got smart quick. I think I'm going to modify the Gummy and give it more color like a Sardine and even partially cut it adding some red for blood to make it look more like the chunks we are trowing. I guess that might be on the "Ragged Edge" as Conway would say of fly fishing.

Randy, great photos, I'd love to get down there to chase some fish for a weekend. I've yet to catch a YT or dodo. Is a 10 weight the go to setup? We'll have to get together when you and Timmy make it up here. Unfortunately, the stripers havn't been happening so far this year in the bay, but hopefully the delta will be a different story this fall. Tight lines -Loren

Loren, 10 weight is the low end of the stick necessary. A few weeks ago I got worked by some big Dorado on a 10 weight. These fish seem to fight harder than the baja fish. It must be the cooler water temperatures that give them extra stamina.

Randy - That looks like a great fish and a fun trip! Amazing you found that paddy, it's not as big as I would of thought. 25 miles is a pretty good run. Looks like you caught a great day. Keep it up man.

RANDY,

A Grand time for Bryan & Yourself... No Doubt...

You might wanna check out the fly plates in Gilmore's "Tuna on the Fly" there's these two Chuck bait patterns that might be perfect for modification.. One is made from folded foam and looks like a Butterfish Head, the other one is made from marabou and looks effective as well. Both patterns were designed by Gene Quigley.. I've been thinking about modifying them for my own use, as we've had Fish wallup the Dead 'Chovies we throw over the side on Rob's Boat.. tyed on a somewhat Lighter hook and dead drifted behind the Boat, they oughta get one some action...

Might be heading out this coming Sunday on Rob's boat from L.A. Harbour.. maybe make the run over to Catalina and hunt the Bigger Bonito and look for 'Tails around the east end of the Island...

Very good Sunday there...
