HOONIE GHOST SHRIMP
Originated by Kyung Kim
I originally
developed this fly to imitate the ghost shrimp that corbina feed on.
Since then it's caught just about every species of fish that feeds in the
surf zone (corbina, halibut, surf perch, yellowfin croaker, spot fin
croaker, jack smelt). I use heavy brass eyes for their weight and also
because they're more durable and environmentally friendly than lead.

I also tie the fly with a
tungsten conehead (large) instead of the brass eyes. This fly does not foul
and rides with its point up Clouser style. I tie two versions. One that's
orange and white, and the other all tan. The tying instructions that follow
are for the orange and white version. To tie the tan version, just use tan
material instead of the orange and white.
Finally, this fly produces
best when fished with short, sharp strips with a slight pause between strips
on a floating line with a long 18 to 21 foot leader or with a 200 to 300
grain sinking line with about an eight to ten foot leader. Good luck.
Materials:
Hook: Daiichi x452
x-point or Mustad 34007, size 2-6 (sharpen the Mustad)
Eyes: 7/32 Nickel
dumbbell eyes in gold, silver, or black or tungsten conehead in the same
colors
Tail: Calf tail
(orange and white or just tan)
Throat: Calf tail
(white or tan)
Body: Mohair yarn
(orange or tan)
Rib: Gold or
silver medium wire
Flash: Mixed
color crystal flash
Thread: White
flat waxed nylon
Tying steps:
1. Tie on
dumbbell eyes about a third of the way back from the eye of the hook
Clouser style.
2. Tie in some
white (or tan) calf tail. The tail should extend about a hook length
beyond the bend of the hook.
3. Tie in about
five or six strands of crystal flash on top of the calf tail so that some
of it extends just past the calf tail.
4. Tie in a
little orange calf tail on top of the crystal flash. It should be the same
length as the white calf tail.
5. Tie in a
piece of wire at the end of the hook shank.
6. Tie in a
piece of orange mohair yarn at the same place and wind thread forward to
just behind the eye of the hook.
7. Wrap the
mohair yarn forward to cover the hook shank. When you get to the dumbbell
eye, wrap the yarn underneath the dumbbell to the tie off point just
behind the eye of the hook. Tie off yarn and cut off excess.
8. Wind the wire
forward in the opposite direction so that it crisscrosses the yarn and tie
off just behind the eye of the hook in the same manner as we did for the
yarn.
9. Tie in some
white (or tan) calf tail just behind the eye of the hook so that it
extends just past the hook bend for the throat.
10. Tie in five
or six more strands of crystal flash so that some of it extends just past
the throat.
11. Finish the
head and whip finish. Cement or epoxy the head.
