Baja Fly Fishing Reports and News

The final day of fishing for yellowtail this year was beautiful-we managed a second day of flyfishing with virtually no wind interference. Parked out a quarter mile off Los Piles on the East side of Cerralvo Island there were fifty or more pangas-mostly commercial and sport fishers with 6-8 ounce sinkers and a live mackerel for bait. They were getting a lot of fish. We headed on to our spot on the shore line and the same solo fisherman in a panga was there again and told us that he was holding zero fish. We threw bait anyway for a half hour or so and they boiled on the surface for the bait, and then came up again farther from the boat. We were on the rocks but they moved into the deeper water. I tried fishing deeper with a slow jerky retrieve and nothing happened. We decided to move toLa Reina-the lighthouse and sea lion colony. A group of four or five fish hit the bait once and disappeared. We tried the other side and caught some large skipjack tuna and headed back to the island for more bait. There was a huge school of big sardinas and millions of babies in the wash among the rocks. It took two throws of the net to fill our tank.

We moved thirty feet outside the school and they came up and I was on again. The fish started to move towards deep water and suddenly made a fright train dash for the shore. Valente ordered " Reel, reel!" It instantaneously circumnavigated a twenty foot diameter rock and we raced in to try to get over it. Over the rock we pulled up backing.. I hooked three more fish in the same area and had the same results, except that I only lost part of my leader and the fly -not the fly line too.. It was a great way to end the week with my buddy. It's a special occasion when I am lucky enough to fish with him for several days in a row. And the good fish made it even better. Can't wat to meet the yellowtail here again next year. Thanks to Greg, Ben, Jason and Chris for being such great fishing buddies and having so much fun. Next trip is the "get the jump on the roosters trip"-April 20-27. Big roosters anyone?
