Basic Fly Fishing Tackle and Gear For Kayak Fishing

bulletDisc drag reel with intermediate and 300-400 grain sink tip integrated line (example: Airflow Depth Finder or SA Streamer Express) or 24-30 foot shooting head. An extra line for back up-brain coral or a big fish could take part of your sinking head.
bullettools for reel cleaning
bullet8,10, 15, and 20 pound  rolls of leader (fluorocarbon is best)
bullet30-pound mono for shock (bite) tippet
bulletLine nipper on a “zinger” to pin on your shirt or PFD
bulletLight weight fingerless gloves for paddling, sun and some fish spine protection
bulletThermorest or similar pad for kayak seat-this really makes a difference!
bulletFanny/belly pack or chest pack.
bulletReef walkers, surf booties, Crocs or similar for wade fishing
bulletPolarized sunglasses
bulletHead lamp with extra batteries (for late evening fishing)
bulletSmall dry bag for cameras, snacks etc. Note that it will get wet.
bulletLightweight fleece top with windbreaker or kayaking top to wear early and late, especially on the spring trip.

Suggested flies:

Clouser and Sardina style streamer flies with eyes 2 to 3 ˝  inch long with sharp strong hooks {size 1 to 3/0, with 2/0 is most common) are the best for most fish we  will encounter.  Crease flies are fast becoming another favorite all round fly.

If I had only one fly I could bring, it would be a size 2/0 Amigo.

Flies tied with Ocean Hair last longer than flies tied with buck tail, as do flies with epoxied heads.

Colors:

black & white with pearl or silver flash

turquoise blue & white with pearl or silver flash

Bring Grenmies, Terry Baird’s Hulas, bonefish flies, or shrimp patterns if you have them for fishing the mangrove flats- small poppers or crease flies are great also. Please inquire for purchasing.

Obviously not everyone has kayak saltwater fly-fishing experience. I will be teaching all aspects of fly-fishing for in-shore fish. Please inquire about equipment rentals if you don't want to purchase at this time.

Conventional gear

If you have no fly fishing experience, then bring conventional gear :

bulletSmall, strong bait casting and or spinning rod with level wind reel and 200 yards of 15 - 20 lb. test-and an extra spool of line
bullet3" to 4" Rapalas blue or mackeral
bulletLead heads with various rubber bodies especially clear with glitter and purple
bulletSpinners
bulletTypical rig for fishing a fly: Crocodile (3") with hook removed and swivel attached. Add a foot of line and a  fly.

Optional Equipment

bulletA Lycra suit is a good idea to prevent jellyfish stings if you plan on going in the water, especially during October, early November, and May. Don't buy one! I may have your size available for rent
bulletDay pack to take extra equipment on the support panga
bulletFish stringer – try the “safety pin” kind used by spear fishermen
bulletLanding net or bogagrip-great for landing fish and removing the hook
bulletSmall gaff
bulletFinger protection tape
bulletExtra polarized sunglasses
bulletSmall tying kit & vise
bulletExtra rod & reel or spools
